Endosperm

Apart from members of the Orchidaceae,
Podostemaceae, and Trapaceae, all
angiosperms form endosperm tissue.

It may be consumed by the developing
embryo, or it may persist in mature seed
as storage tissue

Endosperm tissue is unique:

  • It is triploid, the product of three haploid
    nuclei (two of female origin and one from
    the male);
  • It is a homogeneous mass of parenchymatous
    tissue lacking any organogenic or vascular
    differentiation.
