Transposable genetic elements |
| In certain species and in certain genetic backgrounds, a series of genetic elements can occasionally be transposed from one position on a chromosome to another position, or cause chromosome breaks, resulting in a genetic mosaic. When the insert interferes with the function of a pigment gene, variegation can occur. This phenomenon is described in maize, petunia and ipomoea. |
