Secondary metabolites: introduction

Primary metabolites are compounds needed in the basic processes that keep the plant alive, such as carbohydrates, proteins and lipids.

Secondary metabolites are compounds produced in plants that are not necessary for the plants basic functions. Some secondary metabolites are produced as chemical defense against microbes and animals.

Secondary metabolites are used in the pharmaceutical industry, as flavourants and dyes, and in perfumery. Secondary metabolites include terpenes, cardiac glycosides, steroidal compounds, alkaloids and many more.
