| Selection procedures are generally of two types: |
| Visual selection: This technique is restricted
to the fusion of colorless protoplasts with "colored protoplasts.
It may be possible to attach a fluorescent label to the membranes of the
parent protoplast and separate by means of fluorescent cell sorting |
| Biochemical selection: Somatic hybrids can be
selected by using a medium to encourage selective growth. Another method
involves the use of biochemical mutants and a selection of somatic hybrids
by a form of complementation. |
