True-to-type

Theoretically non-chimeral plants can be micropropagated using different approaches: axillary branching, adventitious budding, embryogenesis,...
For micropropagation purposes axillary branching is the preferred technique used. In principle this yields true-to-type plants. It is the only technique which can be considered for the propagation of chimeras.

As the number of subcultures increases, a medium which was originally developped to yield axillary shoots can shift to the production of adventitious shoots. As a consequence the risks for somaclonal variation increase.
