The prospects of success with the genetic manipulation of plants has created considerable public interest. Melchers and his co-workers (1978) produced a hybrid plant from the fusion of potato and tomato protoplasts, allowing the transfer of genetic information from two different organisms. The method provides the opportunity of producing hybrids between related but sexually incompatible species. |
