| Thimann showed that the growth of axillary buds, which remain dormant in the presence of terminal buds, can be initiated by the exogenous application of cytokinins. Thus one could induce the release of lateral buds on a growing shoot with an intact terminal bud by growing the shoot in a medium containing cytokinin. This would release buds from apical dominance. |  |
