Northern blotting

Northern blotting is similar to Southern blotting
but RNA is used.  The mRNA is extracted from
a plant and resolved according to size using
agarose electrophoresis.  The mRNA, which
is single stranded, is transferred to a membrane
in a similar way as the DNA is.  The northern
blot is then probed with the denatured cloned
gene or cDNA.  This technique is useful in
revealing whether the size of the cloned cDNA
is full length.
