New techniques

New techniques for transforming plants are constantly being developed.  A vacuum infiltration technique recently developed is used to increase transformation efficiency.  The plant and Agrobacterium culture are exposed to low atmospheric pressure thus aiding the infiltration of Agrobacterium into the plant tissue.  The natural infection mechanism of plant viruses and transposons (transposable DNA elements) are also being exploited to produce gmo's (genetically modified organisms).
