| The most extraordinary system of transferring DNA into plant cells involves minute metal beads being shot into plant cells. These tungsten beads (1 µm in diameter) are coated with DNA. The beads are fired from a gene gun with velocities of about 430 meters per second. Cells in the direct line of fire are destroyed but some peripheral cells are able to survive. The transformants are selected on the basis of marker selection. |
