Binary system

Currently the standard method for Agrobacterium mediated goc transfer is the binary system.  The T-DNA region in a binary vector has been deleted and a kanamycin resistance gene inserted to allow selection in plants.  A modified Ti plasmid called a helper Ti plasmid has been altered so that it does not contain the T-DNA but still carries the genes necessary for infection.  The helper Ti plasmid facilitates the transformation of the DNA from the binary vector into the plant cell.  Transformants are selected by antibiotic resistance.
