often does not progress past the first division due
to inhibitory substances in the anther
- Rapid proliferation of anther wall tissue can occur,
resulting in non homozygous diploids
- Starting with isolated microspores will always yield
homozygous plants, even if they are diploids
(case of different cereals) or even triploids (Petunia)
- Microspore culture gives a homogenous population
of plants resulting from developing microspores or
pollen grains, while removing anther wall tissue
