Developmental stages: pollen

Sunderland reported that anthers fall into one of three categories: premitotic, mitotic, or postmitotic.

Premitotic:

best response from anthers where the microspores
have completed meiosis, but have not yet started
the first pollen division (Hyoscyamus).
Mitotic:

best response from anthers at the time of the first
pollen division (Nicotiana tabacum).

Postmitotic:

best response from anthers at the early bicellular
stage of pollen development (Atropa belladonna)
