Initiation of callus

Wounding may result in callus
formation at the cut/damaged
ends of stems or roots. Callus
formation has been observed in
almost all groups of living plants.

The initiation of wound callus
is a protective response by the plant;
cell division is activated as a result
of changes in the endogenous
balance of the phytohormones.
Mechanical injury, invasion by
microbes and insect attack may
also result in callus production.
